About Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD)
Definition
FSD is a complex condition affecting millions of women and the diagnosis of sexual dysfunction in women is often difficult because of the varying definitions of the female orgasm - an orgasm often means different things to different women. The most clinical definition is that the vagina and uterus contract after increased blood flow.
"Sexual dysfunction" refers to inadequate sexual response, which may be due to a lack of sexual desire or to an inadequate performance. It may be that there is a lack of satisfaction or orgasm. Disorders of satisfaction include impotence, loss of interest and pleasure in sex or uncomfortable sex, diminished sexual sensation and lubrication, and inability or difficulty reaching an orgasm. Disorders of performance can occur during arousal, penetration and ejaculation.
It is possible that desire, orgasmic capability and ejaculatory capacity may be intact even in the presence of sexual dysfunction or may be deficient to some extent and contribute to the sense of inadequate sexual function.
What Causes It?
In 1999, The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that 43% of women experienced sexual dysfunction at some point in their life. Until recently, the focus has been on male sexual dysfunction (31% experienced sexual dysfunction).
A small percentage of impotence in women is psychological otherwise the cause(s) is usually physical or organic in nature. The main psychiatric causes of sexual dysfunction include stress, depression and guilt. Physical causes include problems with the blood supply to the genital area, side effects of medicines and drugs, disorders of the nervous system, structural damage to the vagina, childbirth, hormonal disorders (menstrual and menopausal problems), vaginal dryness and other complex or multi-systemic diseases.
The lack of sexual desire may be due by any generalized illness or hormonal disorder or to the taking of drugs that antagonize proper function. Impotence can follow nerve damage from operations on female organs and the lower bowel and can be the result of neurological diseases affecting the autonomic system. Reduction in libido, delay or failure of orgasms, reduction in sexual desire and arousal are all possible side effects of the aforementioned.
The Four Types of FSD:
The American Foundation of Urologic Disease formed a Consensus Panel in 1998 to help identify the diagnosis of FSD. Four categories of disorders were established:
- Sexual Desire Disorder: You don't feel "in the mood" for sexual activity. If there is a deficiency or absence of sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity. More commonly referred to as low sex drive or libido, a recent survey found that this affects 33.4% of American women between the ages of 18-59.
- Sexual Orgasmic Disorder: You have difficulty achieving orgasms or don't have them at all. The same survey found that this affects 24.1% of American women between the ages of 18-59.
- Sexual Pain Disorder: You experience pain during intercourse. The same survey found that this affects 14.4% of American women between the ages of 18-59 and that this was the only condition to show a relationship to age (it decreases as women get older).
- Sexual Arousal Disorder: You have trouble becoming vaginally lubricated or "wet" and/or your sexual sensations are diminished.
Medical and clinical research is currently focusing on sexual arousal disorder that may include a persistent or routine inability to attain or maintain genital lubrication or engorgement in response to sexual stimulation. Both arousal and orgasmic disorders can be caused by the lack of blood circulation of the clitoris and genital area and may be related to medical conditions such as menopause, vascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, pelvic trauma and other conditions related to poor blood flow.
* the percentages used above are from the recent survey conducted by Laumann and colleagues at the University of Chicago
Key Areas Influencing the Human Sexual Response
- Chemical: Neurotransmitters involved are nitric oxide (helps dilate blood vessels), dopamine, vasoactive intestinal peptide and prostaglandins.
- Hormonal: Low testosterone levels reduce sex drive in both men and women.
- Physical: Female sexual dysfunction is often due to physical or sexual pain.
- Psychological: Stress and depression reduce sex drive in both men and women. For example, the sex drive in men is lowered when he has difficulty earning an adequate income or providing for his family.
- Relationship: Sexual problems may be a function of relationship issues.
- Vascular: Hardening of the arteries reduce blood flow and leads to difficulty with arousal.
Besides hormonal imbalances, the female sex drive is also affected by the way a woman thinks and feels about herself, her feelings about sex, how she relates to her partner and how her partner relates to her. The context of a woman's sexuality is as important to the female sex drive as is the physiological outcome of sex. Other causes could be fatigue ("super woman syndrome"), depression and anxiety disorders.
Certain medical conditions reduce libido, performance or enjoyment. These include hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease and neurologic disorders. Drugs that interfere with sexual function include some antihypertensives, SSRI's, sedatives and beta-blockers. The nutrient 5-HTP, which converts into serotonin, may also reduce sex drive. Excessive self-stimulation also reduces sexual sensation.
Women are vastly different from men in their sexuality and every woman is different from the next in her sexual needs, desires and feelings. Much of the female sex drive may be based on her sexual relationship with her partner. For most women, sex drive depends on contributions from her body, mind and partner.

About Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the oldest, most comprehensive, safest and most effective medical system that exists. It has sustained the health of the world's longest ongoing civilization for over five thousand years. Its premises may be conceived as inductive rather than based in cause and effect. Practitioners have recorded in medieval archives, that span for more than three thousand years of written history, their results of meticulous clinical research that supports such claims. This medicine is deeply rooted in the primordial principles of the "Tao" a harmonious balance of Yin and Yang.
While modern medicine might view disease as a malevolent external invasion by an enemy that must be destroyed, TCM would tend to see it as a state of depletion or vacuity establishing vulnerability and allowing malevolent agents to enter the body and cause disease. Treatment protocol in TCM would be directed toward what is referred to as the "root" of a disease rather than aggressively attacking superficial manifestations or symptoms. Since Chinese medicine is a whole person medicine, the root of the disease might be found in the physical plane (viscera, trauma, or genetic, etc.), or most frequently on the inspirational or spiritual plane (the seven passions of which are anger, joy, preoccupation, grief, fear, fright and rage).
There are more than 2000 items listed in Chinese herbal pharmacopoeias, but only about 350 are used in general practice. Less than 100 are regarded as indispensable in formulating the most popular prescriptions. When applying these herbs in treatment protocol, the primary focus is to support the rehabilitation of natural functions of the body and its mechanisms. This can be accomplished by the application of strategies such as "tonify, transform, regulate, drain, release, clear, expel, calm and relieve." This differs from modern medicine that tend to "replace, augment, supplement and remove." Using herbal remedies is most definitely a safer alternative to prescription sex enhancers!
Chinese herbal medicine may take a bit longer to achieve desired results than Western medicine, but it will provide longer-lasting benefits rather than quick results with sometimes long-term side effects.
